AP Studio Art —
Artist Profile: Timothy King

AP ArtworkQ: Where did the idea for the piece come from? How was the piece developed? Was it a part of a series or an ongoing interest?

A: This piece evolved from an assignment in AP Studio Art that was to be done during winter break. We were to create a piece that incorporated gesture line and a rendered image. I worked around with the image for a while. Then, while I was flipping through my sketchbook I recalled an idea I had about making something look like a page from a coloring book. I decided it would be perfect for this piece.

Q: What medium/media did you use? In which section of the portfolio did you submit it?

A: I submitted this piece under the Quality section of the AP Drawing portfolio. I used pen for the background and numbering and colored pencils for the rendering of the flower.

Q: What particularly do you like about the artwork?

A: I like the fact that this piece turned out almost exactly as I had it planned from the beginning. I didn't have much confidence in my ability involving ink. I was afraid that I would screw the whole piece up near the end and have to start over, but everything turned out very well.

Q: Did the piece involve any particular challenges or difficulties?

A: It was a challenge for me to use a pen in this piece, because I knew that there was no room for mistakes. I also found it difficult to do the numbers, because I don’t like my handwriting, but I could print them on the paper. However, I am pleased with the end result.

Q: Did you study art long before taking AP?

A: Art was a once-a-week subject for all eight years at my grade school. For a few years, I took short drawing classes in a summer program. When I got to high school, I took a semester of art in both freshman and sophomore years. Junior year was the first time I was in a yearlong art class.

Q: What are your plans for the future? What are you doing now?

A: I am currently finishing my senior year at St. Xavier HS in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am taking AP General Portfolio this year and working on trees for the concentration segment of my portfolio. Next year I will be going to the University of Cincinnati. I hope to focus my studies in visual communications and mathematics. I am also going to be running on the cross country and track and field teams. I have been running cross country and track and field since seventh grade. As a senior I was second man on the state winning team that had the lowest score in over a decade and set a new record team time. As a junior I was on the 4 x 800 relay that was the first event ever to win at the State Meet.
