AP Studio Art —
Artist Profile: Ashley Silvernell

AP ArtworkQ: Where did the idea for the piece come from? How was the piece developed? Was it a part of a series or an ongoing interest?

A: It was my goal to make the piece as symmetrical as possible using only hues of orange, blue, black, and white.

Q: What medium/media did you use? In which section of the portfolio did you submit it?

A: This piece was submitted in the color/design portion of my portfolio. I used acrylic on board.

Q: What particularly do you like about the artwork?

I liked the composition and enjoyed the fact that I created a lesson plan for myself.

Q: Did the piece involve any particular challenges or difficulties?

A: The piece was somewhat difficult because I used acrylics on a very absorbent board. As soon as the color touched the board, it was dry. It took a long time to create smooth color gradations.

Q: How did it fit into your AP course?

A: My course was mainly self-study. My art teacher wanted her students to create their own lessons and develop their work from their own interests. This was the first piece I created for my AP portfolio, so at this point, I was still searching for the direction I wanted to take my work.

Q: Did you study art long before taking AP?

A: My mother is an artist (and also my art teacher), so I have been studying art for my entire life.

Q: What are your plans for the future? What are you doing now?

A: I am currently enrolled in the Savannah College of Art and Design. I am studying architecture.
