AP Studio Art —
Artist Profile: Brett Rogers

AP Artwork This photograph is by Brett Rogers, who graduated from Roaring Fork High School, Carbondale, CO, in 1995. It was submitted as one of the four original works required for the General Portfolio that he completed during the 1994-95 school year. Roaring Fork did not have an AP Studio Art program; therefore, Brett worked on his portfolio independently, with the aid and supervision of an artist who also provided him with working space. With the approval of the school, Brett was able to work in this studio for about the same amount of time he would have otherwise spent in a traditional art class.

According to Brett, following an independent course initially made it difficult to find all the information necessary to develop an AP portfolio. Working out a concentration topic was also a challenge; he decided on self-portraiture. Although the piece presented here is a photograph, most of his work for the portfolio was in drawing and painting.

This image was captured after Brett and a friend, Chris Hays (who appears in the photo), went to a karate tournament, during which his friend's nose was broken. The photo is one of a series of photographs documenting the event, although it is one of the few Brett decided to print. When the two returned from the emergency room, Brett took this picture; the blood-stained karate jacket on the ground is the one Chris was wearing when he was injured. The dog in the photo was unplanned, but fortunate.

Brett has just completed his freshman year at the Rhode Island School of Design. Next year, he plans to begin studying film and video. He's unsure how this will work out, although he's looking forward to finding out. In any case, he plans to continue drawing and painting.
