The
work reproduced here is by Gregory Alexander, and was created when he was an AP student at
Edmond Memorial High School in Edmond, Oklahoma during the 1994-1995 school year. At
Edmond High School, AP Studio Art is not a class per se, but rather, an extracurricular
addition to the regular art class. This work is a monoprint (a print created as a single
image, rather than as part of an edition of identical images). Gregory states that he
particularly likes monoprinting because it is relatively quick, but methodical; he
currently prefers it to painting.
The content of this print centers on the bull, Sydney, who is celebrating his birthday
with Raven, the creator. It is one of several monoprints Gregory created for his portfolio
that are linked by the representation of bulls. Gregory is interested in primordial human
symbols, such as the bull and the raven (although he did this work without ever having
seen a live bull). Since graduating from high school, he has worked at a variety of jobs
(including a stint digging ditches) as far afield as Australia and as close as his home
state. The latter locale has since enabled him to become considerably more familiar with
living, breathing bovines.
Content is a critical aspect of art for Gregory, because art's potential to communicate
with other people is so important to him. Although he loves the technical side of art, he
feels that art doesn't resound without an audience, without being perceived and understood
by other people. Because of this orientation, he is trying to work more symbolically, and
more "from the heart." He believes that it is also important for people to be
engaged in the process of looking at and understanding art; in contrast to watching TV,
looking at art is an active process. Gregory says that he, too, had to learn how to be
engaged with pictures. Now, he most admires art that one can live with, and in which
nuances and subtleties emerge as the viewer gets to know the work.
Gregory plans to attend the University of Tulsa in the fall of 1996, where he will
study art and anthropology. |
