This
piece, created by Jennifer Lippmann, a 1996 graduate of DuPont Magnet High School in
Louisville, Kentucky, was submitted as part of a Drawing Portfolio. Using an inkpad and
her fingerprint to fill in a light pencil sketch, Jennifer created several smaller works
and then four or five large portraits including this one, using herself as a model from a
mirror. She wasn't sure that her technique was working after the first pictures, but
when her art teacher, Corie Neumayer, talked with her and showed her similar ideas carried
out by artist Chuck Close, Jennifer felt inspired. The boost of confidence made a big
difference. Another thing that helped was getting new ink for the old stamp pad. The fresh
ink made it much easier to achieve the dark values without "stamping the ink pad a
million times" and losing the texture of the fingerprints to a dull grey.
Jennifer's senior-year art class was not an official AP course, but rather an
independent study. She states emphatically that it was all due to conversations with Corie
Neumayer, her art teacher, that she decided to take the AP Studio Art Exam.
Jennifer is currently attending Dartmouth College. She has not declared a major yet but
will probably pursue something in literature, languages or philosophy. Although art has
never been her main interest, it has always been important to her, and she plans to
continue with it in the future. |
