Kurts watercolor of his home basement was created to accompany an art school
application. He submitted it in the 2-D section of his AP Studio Art portfolio, as well.
Painted from life, because Kurt does not like to work from photographs, this piece
developed quickly. He finished it in two days, working 10 to 12 hours on it both days.
Most of his art is completed this rapidly. The careful depiction of details and the time
it took to execute them made this piece challenging. Kurt especially liked the challenge
of working with a limited palette. By layering and mixing his colors of red, brown, and
blue, he was able to give his watercolor a depth and richness of tone. Watercolor is the
medium Kurt favors, but he likes working with other media, too.
Kurts AP Studio Art class at J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, was combined with an advanced art class, so not all of the students in the
classroom were AP art students. His art teacher, Mrs. Cloud, manages the class like an
independent study, giving her students assignments only when they run out of ideas.
Running out of ideas is not a problem for Kurt. He likes to work outdoors and to
experiment with different subjects and media.
Now in the New York School of Ceramics and Art at Alfred University, Kurt is studying a
traditional art school curriculum. He has not declared a major, but will choose something
that relates to art. |
