This
self-portrait is one of several that Alexander Farley developed for his Concentration. His
idea was to explore how movement could be created through a series of portraits, starting
with a rough, black and white look, and gradually using color and achieving a more
finished result. Alexander also explored the effects that different colors and media could
have on the emotional character of each piece. For Alexander, the major benefit of
submitting the AP Studio Art Portfolio was to "evaluate where I stood among other
students in the country." Having this piece chosen as an example of some of the
finest work created by AP Studio Art students was a further affirmation of his talent.
Alexander is currently taking a double major in Biology and Fine Arts at the University
of Pennsylvania. In 1997, he was also a winner of the Pennsylvania High School
Architecture Competition, and was named a Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellow for Genetic
Research. In the future, he hopes to become a reconstructive surgeon (his particular
interest is in artificial tissues), or a neurosurgeon. |
