This workshop will address issues related to beginning and teaching a successful AP Art History course. We will discuss resources and texts, pacing, the nature of the AP ®Art History test and the ways the test shapes the course. Several teaching strategies will be presented as well as ideas about how to energize a lecture format with activities intended to engage students. We will look at the 2004 exam and discuss not only its content, but the way in which it was read and graded. Teachers will receive materials they will be able to use in the coming school year.

Participants will be provided with strategies for the development, creation and teaching of instructional units for the AP Comparative Government course. Resources and professional development opportunities will also be incorporated throughout the workshop to help facilitate the creation of an AP Comparative Government course. To prepare students with the skills needed for success both in the Advanced Placement Comparative course and also on the national examination in May, participants in this workshop will be given techniques and suggestions for the incorporation of writing and research assignments, current events, critical thinking excercises and activities, and review strategies for the national examination. Participants will also be provided with a review of the national examination, its structure, and strategies for preparation.
Also, information regarding the changes in the AP Comparative curriculum, effective in the fall of 2005, will be presented and discussed in this institute. Along with strategies and ideas for the teaching of thematic units, participants will be receiving supplemental materials and resources on the new countries that will be added to the list of the current countries that are examined in the course.

It will familiarize particpants with the content and the different components of the AP Literature Examination. The workshop will provide an overview of the basic structure and content of the Advanced Placement French Language course. After giving a brief overview of the entire AP French Language Exam, we plan to do extensive practice on examining the rubrics used by the AP consultants in assessing the cassettes and essays of the AP Language Exam. This workshop will focus on the needs of teachers who have taught AP Psychology for at least three years, although all are welcome. There will be an in-depth analysis of all released multiple-choice and free-response questions (and the rubrics) from 1992-2004. New teaching strategies, demonstrations, test-taking techniques, useful Web sites and multimedia resources will be shown and evaluated. Participants will take home a wide variety of active learning tools, sample tests, journal writing ideas, TOPSS lesson plans, and other ancillary materials to use in their classrooms. All content areas, including cross-cultural psychology, positive psychology, and statistics will be examined. Sample textbooks and review books will be distributed and assessed. (All participants are asked to bring a few of their favorite lessons or lesson plans to share with class members.)

Teaching Eighth Graders to Love Writing Timed Essays

Eighth graders can and should be writing essay exams. Developing experiences in a brain-based, essay-writing system teaches content and writing skills. Students will start high school having overcome the many psychological barriers of adjusting to essay exams. The structured program also allows for more time-efficient grading. This session systematically teaches participants how to take students to a high level of writing using a student-friendly, structured approach.

Mentoring Made Easy with CollegeEd

Mosley High School's student mentoring program is using the College Board CollegeEd Program to provide social, academic, and career support for incoming first-year students as well as middle school students. Having created a well-trained cadre of rising college-prep juniors, Mosley is spreading the College Board message of "preparing, inspiring, and connecting" to seventh grade students with the help of CollegeEd materials. Student mentors follow up this important service by connecting with eighth graders who have chosen to enroll in a college-preparatory program. This is the beginning of a two-year relationship, which will smooth the transition to high school and ease the stresses associated with the Pre-AP years and AP courses.

Predicting Reactions in AP Chemistry

Both students and teachers in AP Chemistry find the prediction of reactions to be a difficult topic. The prediction of reactions is usually taught as a separate unit just prior to the AP Exam, and often it is not integrated into the rest of the course. Reactions can be included in units such as stoichiometry, gases, thermochemistry, acid base, electrochemistry, and organic chemistry. Handouts on methods that use a stepwise approach will explain how to gradually introduce the prediction of reactions without overwhelming your students. Sample quizzes for units will mirror the format in the free-response section of the AP Chemistry Exam.

One of the most common approaches to teaching basic music theory involves presenting a series of rules that govern tonality. Such rules frequently emphasize specific features to avoid rather than more general goals toward which to strive. Many students who have taken AP Music Theory and core college-level theory don't truly understand the purpose behind part-writing and analysis, and they may never have been asked to integrate the various skills that the AP program tests. Teaching Skills versus Teaching Content: AP versus Grade-Level Environmental Science

A typical AP Environmental Science class requires that students use complex information from different sources: information-processing skills not emphasized in other science courses. The wide range of topics covered also forces teachers to emphasize writing and data analysis skills as students complete traditional, content-related work. This skills-based course structure can be used to train students for success in other science courses. Lessons learned from AP Environmental Science can be applied to grade-level environmental science courses, raising student achievement.
This presentation will provide many examples of skills-based lesson plans employed in an APES course and compare them to similar lesson plans developed for grade-level environmental science classes. Student performance on each exercise will be summarized and content compared to state and national inquiry-based standards for science education.

Manila folders stuffed with wrinkled papers are burdensome to organize and unwieldy to handle. This session will show participants how to use Web pages as a way for students to create interesting and polished portfolio "folders" for their work. These digital portfolios then become visual representations of the students-who they are, what they think, and what they know. The digital portfolio provides students with a technological format in which to organize the growth of their writing and to reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses. It also allows students to think about themselves and how their writing represents who they are.

When AP teachers ask me for our school's placement policy for AP, I respond, "Give me your tired, your poor, and your hungry." Although our school's English AP Vertical Team has gone a long way toward preparing students for AP English, each year some students who sign up for the course do not, for a multitude of reasons, have the ideal reading or writing skills for success on the AP Literature and Composition Exam. This session will focus on activities and strategies for students who are willing to meet the academic challenge but who need to refine their language skills. Simulation is a major component in the AP Statistics curriculum. It can be used to enhance students' understanding of statistical concepts. Some of the areas where simulation is especially effective are: demonstrating the law of large numbers; the mean and standard deviation of a discrete random variable; demonstrating the idea of a normal population; demonstrating the central limit theorem; confidence intervals; and P-values and levels of significance. This session will emphasize how to perform statistical simulations in the classroom using statistical software and a TI-83 Plus graphing calculator.

The laboratory is where most teachers implement an inquiry approach. Here students are able to collect the data in the exploration phase to use in the concept invention phase. This approach can also be appropriate in the lecture/discussion portion of an introductory chemistry class. For an inquiry approach to work outside the laboratory, there must be a way to collect data quickly to use in the invention phase. The presenters of the session have been developing computer-based simulations that allow students to collect data. Coupled with a guided-inquiry activity, students can invent concepts outside the laboratory. This session will demonstrate how the combination of computers, laboratory simulations, and guided-inquiry activities can be integrated into the classrooms at all levels. The session is directed at teachers of students who are usually underrepresented in AP classes. The strategies employed are those to encourage, to build confidence, and to increase the academic skills of students. With these tools, students who never thought of themselves as AP students will be ready, able, and confident to participate and succeed in AP classes. The session will foster questioning as a means of arriving at rich discussion. Participants will view a video of diverse ninth graders engaged in a discussion of print and nonprint text. A model discussion will follow, demonstrating the use of effective questioning techniques. Experimental work is an integral part of introductory college-level courses such as the AP Physics courses. Although excellent physics learning can take place using the simplest equipment, the integration of laboratory activities with classroom work requires careful balancing between time allocation and budget restrictions. Web technology can be a powerful tool for learning physics concepts and developing skills of measurement, analysis, and information processing. Virtual labs and simulations should not substitute for laboratory experience, but they can supplement and extend such experience. This session will demonstrate ready-to-use activities adapted to the main content areas in the AP Physics curriculum.

The benefits of teaching the same group of students across the disciplines of Calculus and Physics will be explored by two teachers who have done it from two different perspectives-one teacher from the perspective of teaching with another teacher, and one teacher teaching both courses simultaneously. Teaching both courses in close harmony has built-in content-teaming potential, and has potential to be very effective in reaching all students with the conceptual clarity, mathematical rigor, and built-in connections that students from both disciplines often miss out on. Other built-in components of teaching such a course can be especially important when one is dealing with students from weaker or urban backgrounds or as one begins a new AP program.

Does It Matter How We Elect Our Presidents? Teaching the Electoral College

As Americans prepare for the presidential election in November, we are polarized on many dimensions, including the way we go about choosing the president. Is the electoral college a satisfactory method of presidential selection? Does the electoral college protect the interests of the states, especially small states, or of racial and ethnic minorities? Would direct election of the president fragment the party system, lead to increased fraud and recounts, or undermine a president's claim to a mandate? Answering these questions is an excellent integrating device for students of American government because it requires referring to the Constitution, federalism, political parties, voting behavior, and the presidency. Professor Edwards, one of the country's leading experts on the presidency, addresses critical questions about the electoral college and shows how to make an eighteenth-century mechanism relevant to twenty-first-century students.

This session will explore the wealth of activities that can be done using the French news program, which is broadcast on national television with subtitles in English. Using the taped segments in class, the students have the opportunity to see firsthand the major stories that appear on the French broadcast. The topics for the various segments revolve around a myriad of topics: politics, weather conditions, tornados, hurricanes, floods, heat waves, medicine, education, sports, style, problems during adolescents, and human- interest stories. These segments can be shown in five minute intervals during a class period. Participants will see that using these broadcast versions of the French news is an effective teaching tool that not only enhances the students listening comprehension and speaking skills, but it also provides the students with the opportunity to observe the variety and traditions that make up the Francophone world.

This presentation will consist of a myriad of Pre-AP and AP class activities that help teachers to walk the AP path. Among the class activities presented are games applied to listening dialogues and narratives that are dynamic and efficient. Theme-based video projects focus on the four areas of language learning, as well as on its cultural aspects. One proposed activity is a Spanish reading program that promotes fluency and comprehension with the 100 Book Challenge, which helps students build confidence and stamina with quick results that transcend to all other areas of language acquisition. The session includes an international online exchange project, featuring a live, online teleconference with teachers in Spain and Buenos Aires for the exchange of ideas and methodology.

An upper-half score on the AP Composition Exam essays, Language or Literature, is within the reach of every AP student. Strategies that enable students to decode the prompt efficiently and marshal support for a response build confidence and writing skill. Participants will learn to help students spot the two types of analysis tasks - "what/how" and "compare/contrast" - and to use close-reading skills in analyzing the passage for the author's meaning or purpose. More than 2.5 million students in more than 22,000 high schools across the country take the PSAT/NMSQT each year, creating comprehensive and meaningful data to inform educators.
However, most teachers are unaware of the data's existence or potential. Whether through AP Potential, the Summary of Answers and Skills (SOAS), or Student Data on Disk, this rich resource is waiting to be tapped. The Digital AP Community: Meeting the Needs of a Diffuse Community Through the Moderated Listserv

The various AP disciplines use the Moderated Listserv to connect their widespread participants, thereby creating a virtual or digital community of member scholars. These include the AP teachers, AP Exam Readers, test developers, and pertinent members of the College Board and Educational Testing Service, the umbrella institutions. Given the diversity of the participants, the listserv must meet multiple, and sometimes conflicting, agendas, and it falls to the moderators to balance the various members' wants and needs. This session will explore these needs in light of the methods and strategies for dealing with the various listserv audiences. Topics such as institutional goals, participant expectations, and moderator responsibilities will be addressed. Listserv procedures will be explained and examples given of problems, conflicting agendas, and moderator strategies. There will be ample time for participants' questions and suggestions for improved service.

This presentation explores obstacles overcome by prominent American female authors such as Alice Walker, Sylvia Plath, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Emily Dickinson, and several minor authors. Research will be addressed with discussion from critics and supporters, answering questions such as: Did these writers ever plagiarize? Why did several of them write under pseudonyms? What obstacles did they overcome? What insights do they offer to today's readers? Historical as well as literary perspectives will be presented. Introduction of a sequence of graphing skills through the middle school and junior high grades will provide more students with a strong base for taking on AP courses in chemistry, physics, and even biology. This session will outline the sequence of plotting ordered pairs, determining constants for linear relationships, and straightening curves to determine exponential and inverse relationships. A variety of laboratory activities in chemistry, physics, and biology will be presented to support this sequence. The mathematical relationships developed will be further connected to those provided on the AP Physics and AP Chemistry Exam equation sheets. (Many of the equations used in AP Chemistry can be applied to AP Biology as well.)

Making Inference Make Sense

How can we help students understand statistical inference? Participants will learn how to prepare students to deal with inference concepts and then lead them through the specific methods in a way that makes sense to them. From the opening day of class, students learn that doing statistics involves thinking carefully and writing clearly. They see that statisticians compare real data to theoretical models, comparisons that are valid only under certain assumptions. This session will begin with the navigation of a flowchart for solving various types of pH calculations. It will continue with the investigation of the use of ICE (Initial, Change, and Equilibrium) and ICF (Initial, Change, and Final) charts in the calculation of pH through the various points found on weak-weak and weak-strong titration curves. As the Advanced Placement Program becomes more widespread and more students take up the challenge of AP, additional support for students becomes increasingly necessary. College-bound students should be taking AP classes to prepare them for the rigors ahead, but some students who really want to enroll in and succeed in these courses often need more than an individual teacher's intervention. Schools routinely establish "Pyramids of Intervention" for those who have failing or marginal grades; however, AP interventions are often left up to individual classroom teachers. This panel will summarize findings from new research studies on the performance and experience of AP students in college and will discuss plans for further research agendas. One new research study compares the performance of AP and non-AP students at 21 different colleges in several different disciplines (follow-up to 1998 Morgan and Ramist study) and compares the relative predictive weight of AP in college performance and graduation rates. This same study also looks at the impact of AP on the selection of a college major. This session will consider what first-year foundation studies look like at a college of art and design. A glimpse into the projects, problems, and curriculum mastered in that first year will give insight into the transfer policy of many colleges of art and design. Courses in two- and three-dimensional design, color theory, fundamentals of drawing, painting, typography, and structural drawing will be examined. Integrated Grammar Instruction

Over the past two years, one school's 6-12 English AP Vertical Team has explored effective ways to integrate grammar instruction in a curriculum laden with writing process and literary analysis. With new SAT tests, state proficiency exams, cries from parents and colleges, the Vertical Team realized a need for more focused language instruction, and so developed and refined a 6-12 grammar strand that is integrated into the curriculum. As an AP Vertical Team, a group of mathematics teachers of various grade levels, administrators, and counselors in a school district works cooperatively to develop and implement a vertically aligned program in mathematics. This one-day workshop focuses on articulating a curriculum anchored in the skills, knowledge, and habits needed for AP mathematics courses. Teachers concentrate on what and how they teach, as well as how they communicate with each other; become much more familiar with the benefits and challenges of vertical teaming; and gain an arsenal of activities to use with team members. Teachers engage in discussion and reflection pertaining to the group dynamics generated by the activities, as well as the implications for AP Vertical Teams, as they attempt to successfully implement these activities. Rate of change is a concept that is central to mathematics beginning in middle school and continuing throughout high school. Teachers need to carefully analyze how this concept can be developed throughout the mathematics sequence to allow all students deeper understanding of the associated concepts and applications. This one-day workshop emphasizes the grade-level-appropriate content, classroom strategies, diagnostic assessment practices, and technology that develop student understanding of rate. Teachers are exposed to and given highly effective activities to use in the classroom. The focus, though, is on illustrating how content, pedagogy, and embedded assessment can help shape the mathematics curriculum into a seamless strand for students. Accumulation is a process that has its roots in middle school and early high school mathematics. For example, area and distance are two topics that are often compartmentalized, but are actually related to each other by accumulation. When students have an early introduction and continue to develop their understanding of accumulation at each grade level, they are prepared for challenging classes, such as AP Calculus, later in high school and in college. In this one-day workshop, teachers examine a seamless development of accumulation concepts for grades 6-12 through grade-level-appropriate content, classroom strategies, and technology usage. Teachers experience a guided-exploration approach that they can use in the classroom to create a framework for knowledge and understanding for each student. Teams develop problems, instructional activities, assessment items, and cross-grade lessons for classroom use. Participants also gain embedded diagnostic and formative assessment strategies that can be used to develop students communication skills and allow teachers to monitor and foster mathematical thinking.

Teaching the concept of chance is daunting; research shows that humans fail to reason optimally about chance, even after taking courses in probability and statistics. Advances in technology, too, make the teaching of chance, variation, and probability very different than in the past, and many of today's instructors find this their least comfortable discipline. This one-day workshop uses recent research on the learning of probability to engage teachers in classroom activities that enable students to analyze and understand chance events. The activities progress through elementary definitions and the concepts and ideas of probability, culminating in the use of simulation to model probability problems. For the purposes of this workshop, the term "grammar" will include: Rules of Usage, Parts of Speech, Patterns of Words, Structure of Sentences, and Arrangement of Sentences. While the focus of this workshop is on grammar, participants should know that it is a part of a greater whole that comprises language arts instruction. An AP Vertical Team is a group of colleagues united in a coordinated effort to structure a curriculum based on common goals and objectives through several grade levels. By teaching and reinforcing music theory skills and concepts from one grade level to the next, a Vertical Team in music makes an ideal preparation for the AP Music Theory course at the high school level. This one-day workshop is designed to help social studies, English, and humanities teachers address a problem common to middle and high school students: the task of developing a logical and effective argument. This workshop will present strategies that enable students to discover and work with the elements of argumentation. The ability of students to control this process for their own purposes is one indication of a sophisticated thinker and writer. In this workshop, teachers of middle and high school students will find activities that can benefit their students. It is our belief, however, that the AP Vertical Team's philosophy lends itself particularly well to the writing process. Teams of teachers from within the same system will probably have a greater impact on students than individual teachers working in a vacuum, however skilled and devoted those teachers may be. When teachers from all grade levels work together to introduce and reinforce these strategies over the years, students are more likely to acquire the intellectual habits of mature writers.
