Pre-AP: Topics for AP Vertical Teams® in Mathematics
-
To give students greater mathematics opportunities, high school and middle school teachers must communicate and work with one another. As an AP Vertical Team, a group of mathematics teachers of various grade levels, administrators, and counselors in a school district works cooperatively to develop and implement a vertically aligned program in mathematics. This one-day workshop focuses on articulating a curriculum anchored in the skills, knowledge, and habits needed for AP mathematics courses. Teachers concentrate on what and how they teach, as well as how they communicate with each other; become much more familiar with the benefits and challenges of vertical teaming; and gain an arsenal of activities to use with team members. Teachers engage in discussion and reflection pertaining to the group dynamics generated by the activities, as well as the implications for AP Vertical Teams, as they attempt to successfully implement these activities. - Subject(s): Pre-AP Strategies in Mathematics
Pre-AP: Strategies in Mathematics - Rate
-
Rate of change is a concept that is central to mathematics beginning in middle school and continuing throughout high school. Teachers need to carefully analyze how this concept can be developed throughout the mathematics sequence to allow all students deeper understanding of the associated concepts and applications. This one-day workshop emphasizes the grade-level-appropriate content, classroom strategies, diagnostic assessment practices, and technology that develop student understanding of rate. Teachers are exposed to and given highly effective activities to use in the classroom. The focus, though, is on illustrating how content, pedagogy, and embedded assessment can help shape the mathematics curriculum into a seamless strand for students. When carefully constructed by a Vertical Team of teachers, concepts can relate meaningfully, rather than just existing as a long list of seemingly unrelated topics and activities.

Pre-AP: Strategies in Mathematics - Accumulation
-
Accumulation is a process that has its roots in middle school and early high school mathematics. For example, area and distance are two topics that are often compartmentalized, but are actually related to each other by accumulation. When students have an early introduction and continue to develop their understanding of accumulation at each grade level, they are prepared for challenging classes, such as AP Calculus, later in high school and in college. In this one-day workshop, teachers examine a seamless development of accumulation concepts for grades 6-12 through grade-level-appropriate content, classroom strategies, and technology usage. Teachers experience a guided-exploration approach that they can use in the classroom to create a framework for knowledge and understanding for each student. Teams develop problems, instructional activities, assessment items, and cross-grade lessons for classroom use. Participants also gain embedded diagnostic and formative assessment strategies that can be used to develop students communication skills and allow teachers to monitor and foster mathematical thinking.

Pre-AP: Strategies in Mathematics - Chance, Variation, Probability
-
Teaching the concept of chance is daunting; research shows that humans fail to reason optimally about chance, even after taking courses in probability and statistics. Advances in technology, too, make the teaching of chance, variation, and probability very different than in the past, and many of today's instructors find this their least comfortable discipline. This one-day workshop uses recent research on the learning of probability to engage teachers in classroom activities that enable students to analyze and understand chance events. The activities progress through elementary definitions and the concepts and ideas of probability, culminating in the use of simulation to model probability problems. Participants gain significant knowledge about finding and correcting student misinterpretations about these events, and discover ways to improve student understanding through reflection and communication. Teachers learn to develop activities for the classroom that help connect the content to events relevant to students and their lives. (THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL)

Pre-AP: Strategies in English - Close Reading
-
This one-day workshop is designed to help middle and early high school teachers facilitate inquiry based practices through close reading in their own classrooms. The goal of this questioning is to promote critical thinking beginning at the foundational level. The strategies presented in this workshop will lay the Pre-AP groundwork necessary for students to begin to meet the demands of rigorous course work. The workshop will focus on classroom strategies that allow students to ask and generate questions, develop the ability to actively engage with any given text, and to analyze and document their own thinking while reading. In this workshop teachers at the middle and early high school grade levels will find activities that can benefit their students. (THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL)

Pre-AP: Strategies in English - Rhetoric
-
This one-day workshop is designed to help middle and high school teachers (and through them, their students) understand the classical art of rhetoric in its two senses: as language crafted for an audience, and the ability to find, evaluate, and potentially se all the available tools of language to achieve a purpose or an effect in a given situation. The workshop will lead participants through activities that will enable them to understand and teach their students how important principles from rhetorical theory underlie the effectiveness of excellent writers and support the clear thinking and sound judgment of successful readers. Pre-AP: Advanced Topics for AP Vertical Teams in English - Grammar
-
This one-day workshop will draw from cognitive research on language acquisition and will examine some of the best practices from traditional grammar instruction, linguistics, writing process, and whole language. For the purposes of this workshop, the term "grammar" will include: Rules of Usage, Parts of Speech, Patterns of Words, Structure of Sentences, and Arrangement of Sentences. While the focus of this workshop is on grammar, participants should know that it is a part of a greater whole that comprises language arts instruction. Therefore, many of the activities will examine the role grammar plays in promoting clear communication and close reading skills. When appropriate, discussions of rhetoric and style will be added. Pre-AP: Advanced Topics for AP Vertical Teams in Social Studies - Developing Reading Habits
-
This one-day workshop is designed to assist social studies teachers in developing their students' ability to read critically. Although individual teachers will benefit from the strategies presented here, the power of the strategies is best realized through an AP Vertical Team that spans both Pre-AP and AP levels (grades 6-12) of social studies classes. The workshop is based on the premise that a coherent articulated program of quality strategies will increase student performance in essay writing by giving them a framework that allows them to develop their writing proficiency in social studies. Pre-AP: Strategies in Social Studies - Writing Tactics Using SOAPStone
-
This one-day workshop is designed to help middle and early high school social studies teachers address some of the problems students encounter in their writing. When teachers from all grade levels work together to introduce and reinforce these strategies, students are more likely to acquire the habits of mind and the skills of sophisticated writers. The focus is on proven classroom tactics that show students how to analyze what good writers do, and then apply this knowledge when creating their own texts. In this workshop, teachers at any grade level will find activities that can benefit their students. (THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL)

Pre-AP: Topics for AP Vertical Teams in Science
-
This one-day workshop is for teachers, counselors, and administrators interested in sequencing curricula and instruction to facilitate student preparedness for Advanced Placement courses in science. An awareness of the entire secondary school science curricula and the rigor required for each AP science course will better enable science personnel to prioritize the content, skills, and expectations in science. The activities and discussions in this workshop are designed to help participants in the process of vertical sequencing. It is important to recognize vertical sequencing will provide challenges as well as opportunities for teachers to improve student preparedness and increase access for all students to advanced courses in science, including AP. At the end of the workshop, participants will understand what a vertical team is and the process needed to incorporate vertical sequencing. (THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL)

- Subject(s): Music Theory
Pre-AP: Topics for AP Vertical Teams in Music Theory
-
This one-day workshop is for teams of teachers interested in vertically aligning curriculum and instruction in music. An AP Vertical Team is a group of colleagues united in a coordinated effort to structure a curriculum based on common goals and objectives through several grade levels. By teaching and reinforcing music theory skills and concepts from one grade level to the next, a Vertical Team in music makes an ideal preparation for the AP Music Theory course at the high school level. This workshop is designed to show how content can drive the collaboration and communication among music teachers (not just music theory teachers, but classroom, band, choir, and orchestra teachers as well) in order to teach music literacy and help students develop as musicians.

Pre-AP: Interdisciplinary Strategies - Augmentation and the Writing Process
-
This one-day workshop is designed to help social studies, English, and humanities teachers address a problem common to middle and high school students: the task of developing a logical and effective argument. This workshop will present strategies that enable students to discover and work with the elements of argumentation. The ability of students to control this process for their own purposes is one indication of a sophisticated thinker and writer. In this workshop, teachers of middle and high school students will find activities that can benefit their students. It is our belief, however, that the AP Vertical Team's philosophy lends itself particularly well to the writing process. Teams of teachers from within the same system will probably have a greater impact on students than individual teachers working in a vacuum, however skilled and devoted those teachers may be. When teachers from all grade levels work together to introduce and reinforce these strategies over the years, students are more likely to acquire the intellectual habits of mature writers.
