Paul F. Keene, Jr., enjoys creating images that form a series, particularly ones pertaining to jazz musicians. Blues Band is an homage to jazz in general and to the talents of the individual musicians in particular. In fact, Keene's impassioned players seem to transport us to heaven, since each of their heads is surrounded by a halo-like radiance. Primarily a painter, Keene uses the quality of the brushstroke and the power of color to highlight the energy and excitement of being in the moment. Such compositions as this reflect his strong sense of African-American cultural identity and heritage.
