AP Latin Literature and AP Latin: Vergil Updates
The 2008–2009 AP Latin Course Description (.pdf/2.3MB) specifies changes in the AP Latin Development Committee's policy on glossing vocabulary for the exam. Note: for the Cicero Latin Literature option, the Oxford Classical Text is the official text of the Pro Archia and the De Amicitia. The parts of the De Amicitia not read in Latin are to be read in English.
AP Latin teachers should also be aware that in the short identification questions, when students are asked to demonstrate their understanding of the Latin they cite, students should:
| 1. |
write out the relevant Latin (note that the use of ellipses or references to line numbers in this part of the exam is not acceptable); and
| 2. |
either translate the Latin; or
| 3. |
write an accurate paraphrase.
Save the date!
The AP Latin Development Committee will be holding a Teacher's Conference on Saturday, November 15, 2008, in Asheville, NC, in conjunction with the Classical Association of the Midwest and South—Southern Section conference. The objectives of the Teacher's Conference are:
Share results of the AP Latin National Faculty Colloquium (10/31–11/2), where college and university Classics faculty will convene to put forth their recommendations for the AP Latin curriculum
Discuss needs of secondary Latin programs and suggestions for program sequencing as a result of the decision to discontinue AP Latin Literature
Identify possible new teacher resources to facilitate the delivery of AP Latin courses in 2010–2011 and beyond
In response to feedback from AP Latin Literature teachers regarding the College Board's decision to discontinue AP Latin Literature after the 2008–09 school year, principals were sent a letter in September explaining this decision. View the letter at the link below. This letter provides details on the future direction of AP Latin, and recommends ways for schools to realign their programs to best serve students who study this discipline.

Update on the AP Course Audit
Administrators at your school are responsible for renewing any courses that were authorized last year through the AP Course Audit process and are being offered again this year. If your course was authorized in 2007–08, and you are teaching the course in 2008–09 but it has yet to be renewed, alert your school administrators to this information. If you are new to teaching the AP course at your school, and haven't yet submitted your course audit materials, you must do so no later than January 31, 2009.
The online, publicly-accessible 2008–2009 AP Course Ledger, in which all of your school's authorized courses appear, will become available on November 1, 2008.
