Make the Course Part of the Curriculum
Thanks to its anywhere, anytime availability, The Official SAT Online Course is an ideal independent study tool. The course also is a powerful supplement to traditional math and English classes.
While the flexibility of the course ensures that every school can implement the program in its own unique way, the following tip illustrates one way in which schools can encourage classroom use of the course.
Integrate the course into your formal curriculum. English teacher Connie Fuller, at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, Virginia, designed a curriculum for use throughout the Henrico County Public School District that provides guidelines for using the course in class, including lesson plans and a timeline.
At Deep Run, lesson quizzes are assigned for class credit, practice essays are treated as timed classroom activities, and students receive a "participation grade" for each assignment they finish.
Principal Joseph Pompeo, at Wallington High School in Wallington, New Jersey, has all juniors take the official full-length pretest at the beginning of the year in order to determine their strengths and weaknesses. Math and English teachers then target particular skills for improvement by assigning specific course lessons.
"The course is more than an add-on," Pompeo says. "My advice is to try to work it into the curriculum and the yearlong instructional program."
