Get Parents Onboard
Parents can be valuable allies in encouraging student use of The Official SAT Online Course, especially since students often use the course at home.
While the flexibility of the course ensures that every school can implement the program in its own unique way, the following tip represents one example of how you can enlist parents in your efforts to promote the course.
Hold information sessions to introduce parents to the course and explain how the program can help their children prepare for college success. Louise Gill, college and careers center technician for Willow Glen High School in San Jose, California, hosts informational evenings for parents where she explains the benefits of the course and demonstrates how it can be used at home as an independent study tool.
Bob Frazier, guidance director at Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida, provides similar information about the course at monthly parents' seminars, and at meetings of the School Advisory Committee, which includes parents, administrators, and students.
Once parents are aware that the course can be used anywhere and anytime, they'll be much more likely to encourage their children to use it at home. That's especially true when they understand the benefits of the course. At Willow Glen, some parents even volunteer to lead online course study groups!
