AP Environmental Field Experiences
The participants will learn how collecting real-world data in fieldwork in their communities and using that data to assess water quality—strategies for assimilating the fieldwork to AP Exam components in environmental science. Water sampling is used to determine the quality of a water system through the use of data collection for abiotic and biotic components to determine the stream quality index. The exam will include turbidity, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, phosphates, macro-invertebrate collections and bacteria. Probe ware will be utilized to graphically display multiple results. All water sampling activities will be tied to the AP Environmental Science free-response questions.

AP Vertical Teams: Science Curriculum Alignment Guide for Middle School and High School
The College Board advocates open access to AP courses. AP Vertical Teams are intended foster the preparation of an increasingly diverse student population for successful entry into an AP course. A foundational function of AP Vertical Teams is aligning curricula for science courses across grades. Participants will learn strategies their schools and school districts can use to map their curriculum in preparation for AP using the new Science Curriculum Alignment Guide for Middle School and High School. In this interactive session, participants will discuss the primary issues and questions involved with subject-specific curriculum alignment and develop strategies for building the local AP Vertical Team.

Assessing Dose-Response, LD-50, and Toxin Remediation with Yeast
Participants will learn to how to demonstrate serial dilution and dose response by testing the respective lethal and remedial effects of hypochlorite (household bleach) and thiosulfate. Since carbon dioxide production by yeast can be measured within a matter of minutes, students will get a chance to “follow up” their experiment with a new trial based on their own data. This will also make it easier for the instructor to coordinate lab results with lecture material.

Drop the Lecture and Let the Students Pick Up Learning
In this session, the participants will learn to guide their class through student-centered activities with the goal of increasing critical thinking, study skills and scientific inquiry. The presenter will communicate this by modeling the role of the teacher during these experiences while the participants model the role of the students. The participants will join in a simulation contrasting the two types of smog, building a model movement of the lithospheric plates, and participate in a carrying capacity game. After each type of student centered-activity, the participants will reflect on the level of critical thinking the activity demanded compared to lectures, worksheets or other teacher-centered teaching techniques.

Resources for the Environmental Science Program
In this session participants will examine recently added instructional resources, identify the role that these materials can play in their instruction, and collaboratively develop strategies for implementation. Participants will also have the opportunity to identify particular instructional challenges that will guide planning for the development of new resources.

Results from the 2009 AP Environmental Science Exam Administration
Sixty-five Participants will examine results of the 2009 AP Environmental Science Exam administration with a member of the Development Committee. Exam topics/questions that were most challenging for students will be identified, discussed, and analyzed. Participants will compare these areas of challenge with AP Environmental Science topics their own students found most demanding. The presenter will assist participants in developing individual strategies for implementing best practices in their own schools and classrooms to address challenging topics from the course and exam. Participants will receive information about changes in how the survey is taught at the college level and how that impacts the course and exam.

Genetically Modified Organisms: Ethical Considerations and Scientific Concerns
This workshop will address the economic, environmental and ethical impact of creating transgenic organisms. After learning about the methods by which GMOs are created and utilized, participants can assess the usefulness as well as the problems associated with the creation of genetically modified plants and animals. The participants will be given valid scientific information that will allow them to present to their students accurate scientific, ethical, and economic arguments for and against the use of transgenic species.
