SAT® Workshops

Held at Manhattan's High School for Arts, Imagination, and Inquiry these workshops provided strategies for improving students’ performance on the test and in college.

The following SAT workshops were available: 


Animating Student Writing Workshop

Developed for English teachers, this workshop offers models, lesson plans, and strategies designed to strengthen students' writing skills, specifically in argumentation. Participants learn:

  • How to raise the quality of student writing through practical techniques
  • How to assess argumentation skills using the SAT essay scoring guide
  • How to implement a long-term plan for improving students' writing

 

School-Based SAT Preparation Workshop

This workshop gives math and English teachers activities and materials to help them design SAT preparation courses suited to their schools. Participants learn strategies for motivating, instructing, and empowering students at all levels for success on the SAT. During the workshop, the group works as a whole and in content-specific teams, bringing to life the material in The Official SAT Teacher's Guide™. Teachers learn:

  • How to understand and explain the SAT's format and question types for math, critical reading, and writing
  • How to plan and conduct preparation sessions that account for individual and class needs
  • How to incorporate print and online SAT Readiness Program™ resources into effective classroom teaching

Participants will be separated during the second half of the workshop to focus on English or math content areas. 

 

Holistic Scoring Workshop

At this workshop, teachers practice holistic scoring, a method for evaluating the overall impression produced by a piece of writing. Participants learn:

  • How to use holistic scoring on essays
  • How to apply practical strategies that help student writers day to day
  • How to create writing prompts that work for students and support valid assessments
