The English Curriculum
While the Commission on English stated that the school and the teacher should have the freedom to decide the specifics of the secondary English curriculum, the Commission's first effort concerned directing curricular content.
The Commission on English identified three components in the teaching of English: literature, language, and composition. The Commission on English spelled out the relationships among these three elements to a strong English program in its working paper College Preparation in English (1960). The Commission on English published and distributed more than 20,000 copies of College Preparation in English. The Commission on English also published and distributed to thousands of schools and communities a brochure entitled Preparation in English for College-Bound Students (1960).
