Purposes of the College Board
The initial impetus to the founding of the College Board, as it became known, was the creation and administration of common entrance examinations. However, Nicholas Murray Butler believed that the College Board and its system of common examinations did more than expedite the admissions process.
According to Butler, the College Board served three purposes:
- To "bring order out of chaos in the matter of college admissions"
- To "more closely relate the work of the colleges to that of the secondary schools"
- To "raise standards of secondary instruction throughout the country"
In this way, Butler stated the general believe of supporters of the College Board that the Board's common examinations worked in the public interest by influencing:
- The standards for college admission
- Teaching in secondary education
