Thousands of Educators to Meet November 9–12 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego to Debate the Future of Education

11/01/06

More than 2,000 teachers, counselors, and school administrators, as well as college educators, admissions officers, and financial aid experts, will gather at the College Board's annual Forum at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego from Thursday, November 9, through Sunday, November 12, to discuss the future of education at a time of increasing globalization and shrinking resources. This year's Forum—A Compelling Case for Education—will focus on the national imperative to ensure that all students have access to higher education and are prepared for the challenges of the twenty-first century.

The Forum will offer more than 130 sessions and workshops on pressing issues facing today's educators. Highlights include:

  • Removing Barriers to College Access for Students from Low-Income Backgrounds: A Framework for Success: Educational leaders will examine issues of academic preparation and information, admissions and financial aid processes, and retention and success. (Saturday, November 11)
  • Immigration and Higher Education: The DREAM Act and State Initiatives: Recent anti-immigration backlash on local and federal efforts to protect the interests of undocumented students will be discussed with a focus on the DREAM Act. Introduced in 2005, the DREAM Act sought to increase undocumented students' access to postsecondary education. (Friday, November 10)
  • Part of the Problem or Part of the Solution? The Role of College Admissions in the Overscheduling of Children: Parents blame colleges for expecting too much and wonder how they can alleviate their children's stress. What is the role and responsibility of college admissions in addressing this problem? (Saturday, November 11)
  • Early Decision and Early Action in the News: Harvard's September announcement that it will end Early Action has put such programs in the limelight. Other institutions followed with similar announcements. What impact will this trend have on the admissions process for students and counselors, and for other colleges? (Friday, November 10)

Notable speakers at the Forum include:

Steven B. Sample, president of the University of Southern California and a leader in interdisciplinary education, will deliver the keynote address titled "Redefining Undergraduate Education for the Twenty-First Century" at the opening session. Dr. Sample is an electrical engineer, musician, and author of The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership, which was named one of the six must-reads for leaders by Harvard Management Update. (Friday, November 10)

Susan F. Martin, director of the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University and an expert on immigration and refugee policy, will discuss the challenges and opportunities of student migration. (Saturday, November 11)

Leaders of Universities including Carlos Jorge Briseño Torres of the Universidad de Guadalajara, Francisco Azcúnaga Guerra of the Universidad de Monterrey, Armándo Sanchez Quintanilla of Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila, and José Ramón Eguibar of Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla will participate in a panel discussion regarding the effect of globalization on our nations' students. (Saturday, November 11)
