National Commission on Writing in America's Schools and Colleges Calls for a Writing Revolution

04/25/03

CHICAGO, IL -- The National Commission on Writing in America's Schools and Colleges presented its final report to Gaston Caperton, president of the College Board, during a press conference held at the Education Writers Association annual meeting. The Commission report, The Neglected "R": The Need for a Writing Revolution, calls for a dramatic increase in the amount of time and money devoted to student writing and recommends that state and local curriculum guidelines require writing in every curriculum at all grade levels. The Neglected "R" also recommends that educators engage the private sector in developing ways to apply technology to the teaching and assessment of writing.
