Prominent Education Reformers to Meet in Chicago September 1617
Gene Carter, Paul Houston, Hugh Price, Michael Riley, Dennis Sparks, Patricia Wolfe, and Others to Discuss School Leadership09/14/05
In an effort to explore ways of cultivating effective leaders of redesigned public schools, the College Board will hold a forum in Chicago from Friday, September 16, to Saturday, September 17.
Supported by funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the forum is part of the College Board Schools program, which has opened five new public schools in New York City and will be creating up to 18 grades 6–12 public schools. Leading researchers and educators, joined by leadership from private foundations and national education associations, will design the agenda. They will discuss the skills and principles necessary to lead an urban public school that provides low-income and minority students with access to and preparation for college. The outcome of the discussions in Chicago will guide the design of a professional institute for school leaders in the coming year.
A diverse array of nationally recognized authorities in education will participate in the Chicago forum. They include Gene Carter, executive director of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; Paul Houston, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators; Hugh Price, author of Achievement Matters: Getting Your Child the Best Education Possible and former head of the National Urban League; Michael N. Riley, superintendent of the Bellevue School District in Washington State; Dennis Sparks, executive director of the National Staff Development Council; and Patricia Wolfe, educational consultant at Mind Matters, Inc., and author of Brain Matters: Translating Research into Classroom Practice. Representatives from The Education Trust, the Gates Foundation, and the American Association of School Administrators are among many others who will also attend the event.
The participants will hold their discussions at the Gleacher Center, part of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, located at 450 North Cityfront Plaza Drive in Chicago. Working sessions will be held at the center all day Friday and Saturday morning. Participants may be available for interviews upon request.
