SAT Reasoning and Subject Tests

Testing under Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD)

Once I've been approved for accommodations, how do I register for the SAT?

When you are approved for accommodations on College Board tests, you receive an SSD Eligibility Code in a Student Eligibility Letter from the College Board. After receiving this code, you have three ways to register for the SAT:

Online

You may register online. You will need to provide your SSD Eligibility Code and a credit card number to complete the online registration process.

Mail

To register by mail, you may mail a completed SAT registration form, payment (check, money order, or credit card information), and a copy of the Student Eligibility Letter. The completed SAT registration form should be mailed in the provided envelope using the star (*) label by the regular registration deadline.

Telephone

You can register by telephone only if you have taken a previous SAT. There is an additional fee of $12 to register by telephone. A credit card is needed to complete payment. The telephone number to call is (866) 756-7346 (Domestic), (212) 713-7789 (International). When communicating with the College Board, and if you have approved accommodations you will always need to provide your SSD Eligibility Code to receive the approved accommodations.

For more information, please visit SAT registration.

Can I register for the SAT before receiving notification of approval for the requested accommodation?

Yes, you can register for the SAT via any of the available means. After receiving the Student Eligibility Letter which includes the SSD Eligibility Code, you should call the College Board at (609) 771-7137. This contact needs to be at least two weeks before a test date to have the SAT registration reflect the accommodations that you will be receiving. Because it takes time to make appropriate arrangements at a testing site (e.g., proctor, space, shipped materials), changes requested less than two weeks before a test date cannot be guaranteed until the next test date.

How long will it take for me to find out if I am approved for the requested accommodations?

It takes approximately 5 weeks from the date that an Eligibility Form is complete to receive a response from the College Board. If additional disability documentation to support the request was submitted, it takes up to 7 weeks from the date that the documentation is complete. Please see important dates for more information.

Can I request additional accommodations or change the current accommodations that are approved by the College Board?

If the change reflects what is currently being provided in the school, your SSD Coordinator needs to complete and submit the Change Form that was supplied with the Student Eligibility Letter for each student.

If you are not receiving in school the accommodations being requested for College Board tests, you will need to include current disability documentation to support the request. Please see the Documentation Guidelines section for more information.

What is the difference between National Center Testing and School Testing?

National Center testing means that you take the test at a National Test Center. These sites often are local educational facilities. Some of the accommodations that can be provided at a National Test Center are:

  • 50% extended time
  • 14 point test booklet
  • Large block answer sheet

School testing means that you take the test at school. Some accommodations that can only be provided at your school are:

  • 100% extended time
  • A reader
  • A writer
  • A Braille version of the test
  • A computer to record written responses

If I am approved for accommodations provided in a National Test Center, how will I know which center to go to?

Your assigned test center for the date requested can be found on your Admission ticket.

Is the school testing given on the same day as center testing?

Students who are receiving school testing most often test at the school they attend. The SAT is given any time within the four-day period beginning with the Saturday national test date. (Please see SAT Calendar & Fees.) The SSD Coordinator at the testing school determines the specific date, start time, and the location within the school, and then notifies the students.
