Grading Exams
How the CLEP exams are scored
After you take the test, your instant score report is provided to you right away. The only exception to instant scoring is the English Composition with Essay, for which results are sent within two weeks of scoring. Scoring of the essay takes place twice a month.
Who does the scoring?
- Multiple-Choice Tests are scored by computer.
- Essays written for the English Composition with Essay exam are graded by College English professors, who are carefully selected by the College Board from the faculty of two- and four-year institutions nationwide.
These professors, known as faculty consultants, receive extensive training and thoroughly review the College Board scoring policies and procedures before grading the essays. Each essay is read and graded by two or more faculty consultants, that grade is combined with the multiple-choice score, and the result is reported as a scaled score. - Optional essays for CLEP Freshman College Composition and Literature exams are evaluated and graded by the colleges that require them, rather than by ETS or the College Board. If you take an optional essay, it will be sent with a copy of your score report (which includes only the results of your multiple-choice test) to the institution you designate on your answer sheet.
Computing scores
For every CLEP test, you receive one point for each correct answer.
Now that CLEP is on computer, points ARE NOT deducted for wrong or skipped answers. This means that you should do your best to supply an answer for each question on a CLEP exam.
The resulting figure, called the formula score, is converted to a scaled score between 20 and 80. Please note: this is a new scale for the former General Examinations.
