The National Commission on Writing believes we must improve the quality of writing in our schools if students are to succeed in college and in life. A primary goal of adding a writing section to the SAT was to strengthen the alignment of the SAT to the instructional practices in today’s classroom and to address the importance of writing skills.

Further, the SAT reinforces the importance of writing throughout a student's education and will help colleges make better admissions and placement decisions.
